What Have You Done For You Lately? Self Care & The FOCUS Factor

“Put your oxygen mask on first. You cannot help anyone else if you cannot breathe. ” – AM

What have you done for you lately? As leaders, CEOs, and caretakers, you have many responsibilities and honestly a lot of people depend on you. In the midst of making sure you meet your deadlines, attend your meetings, and cover all of your bases, it is important to make time and space to exercise self care. I like to think of it as making breathing room in your life.

Self care is not selfish and is vital to getting and staying focused. It is a good practice to press pause and do something that will replenish your mind, body, and soul. If you are a seasoned leader, you may have this all figured out already but reminders are good. We are even reminded during travel on airplanes.

Travel experts state that if you do not put your mask on within 30 seconds of the cabin pressure dropping, you are at risk of passing out. Imagine you have a child or elderly person with you who may need assistance. If you don’t take care of your mask first, both of you are at risk of passing out. It is not different in life. Making sure your have oxygen first is key if you want to be alert and healthy enough to care for and lead others. This looks different for all, but here are some suggestions on how to refill your tank.

  • REST

    • You are not a machine. Your mind and body need to unplug.

  • EXERCISE

    • Getting your sweat on is beneficial for a few reasons. It can reduce sensitivity to stress, depression, and anxiety. In addition, it has been shown to improve learning and mental performance.

  • IMPROVE YOUR DIET

    • A huge fan of juicing, I can personally attest to its benefits. It helps with weight loss, boosts immunity, and increases energy.

Self care is just the start of getting and staying focused.  I will be sharing other facets of the FOCUS factor at the NAPW Central Houston Chapter luncheon as their guest speaker on August 16, 2017. Feel free to join me for a great learning and networking opportunity.
