Stress is real. It is no secret that our everyday lives are full of pressures of all kinds. The phone calls that needs returning. The appointments that needs keeping. The diapers that need changing. The relationships that need maintaining. The decisions that needs making. These things confirm that not only is stress real, but if not properly managed, it can also take its toll on your heart, mind, and overall health.
Why It Matters
Recent tragedies like the loss of the legendary Kate Spade and other well-known figures coupled with the ever-changing cultural climate continue to remind us of the on-going need to manage our stress. When I ran across the fact that suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 34, there was no more convincing that taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being was non-negotiable.[1]Even more, we need to equip the next generation with the keys to proper stress management. The work, relationships, and decisions will not matter if you are not good. I would like to offer you (and challenge you) to stop suffering silently and take on healthy coping mechanisms. These are just a few methods but are preventative. They can eliminate or reduce silent stressors.
Creative Expression
One of the best ways to escape from stress is through tapping into your creativity. Writing, the arts, and singing are just a few ways to channel your energy, release stress, and express how you feel without harming yourself or others. Grab a group for a paint party, escape and get lost in the halls of a museum, or even find a spot with great live music that you can vibe to. It will work wonders.
Physical Exertion
Another way to release stress is through physical exertion. Getting active not only removes built up tension, but it also releases endorphins, our body’s happy hormones. A good workout, brisk walk, or even working on a project that requires muscle and motion helps. It is true that life is short. It is also true that your time spent on Earth should be full of purpose, love, and laughter. If things seem to be weighing down on you, consider one of the methods above.
If you feel like the weight is unbearable and you cannot take it anymore, please consider talking to someone. If you believe in a higher power, prayer is at your disposal. Whether you do or not, you have 24/7 access to 1-800-273-8255. There are people waiting to comfort you. You do not have to struggle in silence anymore.
