Focus on Mental Health for Leaders

“While the business world’s top leaders enjoy the rewards of career and financial success, in getting to that point they open the floodgates to mental health issues and the resulting stigma that still surrounds them.”

N. Brown

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month.

Leaders, you are people too. Your health – physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental is important.

Those in leadership positions, positions of influence, managers, and support understand pressure and stress. You know what that looks like and you know how it feels. If I’m guessing correctly, you’re always looking for ways to relieve or manage it.

(Side Note: Not all stress is bad. Properly harnessed, stress can produce great results. Not properly managed can be detrimental to your health and other things. )

Throughout life I’ve had to apply what I learned in school to various leadership roles. I’d love to share with you a few ways you can relieve stress and reduce the pressure you face.

1.Know Your Self to Manage Your Stress

Answer these questions. They can help you and you can eventually share with others.

  • What makes you tick? (Motivations)

  • What ticks you off? (Aggravations & Frustrations)

  • What brings you peace? (Restorations & Rejuvenations)

  • How are you when you are at a H.A.L.T.? (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) How do you deal before and during those states?

  • What keeps in a state of optimism or with happiness? (Inspirations)

2.Commit to a work – life balance (or flow ) by choosing something you will do weekly.

Some examples & ideas…

  • Exercise regularly

  • Visit counselor or advisor

  • Pause to visit a relative or gather with friends

Does this exist? What’s your flow?

What keeps you grounded?

3.Reward your self and your people.

People love rewards and gifts. (There are tons of ways to implement rewards or systems at no cost.) They can contribute to creating atmospheres of love, gratitude, joy, and vibrancy. The right atmosphere promotes creativity and productivity.

Bonus: Have regular temperature checks with a trusted advisor, team member, or loved one.

Leadership is not for the faint at heart. Prioritize your mental self care and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
