Congratulations! You made it to 2025. If you’re still receiving Happy New Year greetings, here is another one. In my why is this this way, why is that that way thinking, I thought about why we see and say happy new year. We could use other words like bright new year, joyful new year, or even fabulous new year. Yet, that five-letter word, h-a-p-p-y, is simple. It holds a lot of good weight.
By definition, happy means feeling or showing pleasure or contentment. It also means having a sense of confidence in or satisfaction with. It is the antithesis of displeasure, discontentment, and unsatisfied. There are many words in our vocabulary that convey good feelings and greetings.
Happy is seemingly common but it holds a world that many seek to live in, relish in, and dwell in. Sometimes it’s a bottle of something good like your favorite beverage. Sometimes it’s in a hug from home or heaven. Sometimes it’s in simple shut eye that you get after a long day of work.
I have come to discover that happy and happiness are an important part of the human condition. They allow us to enjoy life in many situations. This includes joy and pain, in the shower, in the rain, and in the simplest of actions…and even the complex ones. So here’s to 2025. Whatever it brings your way, whatever you find or stumble upon, may happiness be your portion and a part of that. (…and I hope a little joy.)
